Fun fact: my least favorite subject in school was writing. Until I graduated and then started a Christian blog which I posted on consistently for almost four years.

At some point I ran out of creative juice for my blog, and when I started sharing online again it was on Instagram, with more of a focus on sharing my ag story.

But sharing online again reminded me that my real calling is to use my writing gifts to glorify God and help others know Him, and so these days my content is more and more about Him.

I especially want to help and encourage young ranchers like myself who want to follow Jesus and live well, but feel like so much advice out there is tailored to people with 9-5 office jobs.

If you ever feel like you’ve messed up too much for God to forgive you, you should probably read Psalms 105, 106, and 107. 105 is about all the amazing things God did for the nation of Israel in delivering them from Egypt. And then 106 is about all the times throughout their history when they were completely disobedient and unfaithful to Him. It’s pretty extensive. But 107 talks about God redeeming His people and bringing them back from exile (the exile that happened because of their disobedience.) It ends with this: “let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.” Because that’s the point, whether we’re talking about the history of Israel or our own story: no matter how unfaithful we are to God, His steadfast love endures FOREVER. ❤️
Fun fact about me: I really don’t use recipes that much. Especially when I’m cooking for just me; I’d rather prep the ingredients and then throw together whatever I feel like for each meal. That’s definitely how I usually eat ground beef. I brown one or two packages at once, stick it in the fridge, and eat it throughout the week. This week’s combinations: 🍔 Just in a bowl with ketchup and chopped up pickles (kind of like a cheeseburger in a bowl, but cheese makes my stomach hurt, so I highly recommend you add that if you can) 🌯 Cooked with scrambled eggs and added to a tortilla for a beef breakfast burrito (which is perfectly acceptable to eat at lunchtime) 🍲 Mixed with some tomato paste, frozen veggies, water, and seasonings to make a quick bowl of soup on a rainy day. Oh, and bonus life hack: buy a whole bag of onions, chop them all, and freeze them in individual portions so you only have to cry once every month or two. You’re welcome. It’s that time of year when the cows know when it’s time to move. We’re rotating through pastures pretty quickly and they know any day now it will be time to head east for the summer. By the time each cow has been part of the main herd for a few years, she has the routine down and knows pretty well where to go. Me, on the other hand…still learning to park my fourwheeler far enough back from the gate.

Just do something, no matter how small, and make sure you never skip a day. And now I use that practice for all kinds of habits. For example, it’s great to have a consistent Bible reading plan, but there will be days when all you can do is read one verse. That’s better than nothing and keeps the habit alive. (YouVersion’s verse of the day is great for this.) If you’re working on a big project and can’t find the motivation to dive into it, just make sure you touch it every day. Some days you might really only do a little bit; other days that little bit might get you going enough to make significant progress. Small, consistent habits will always yield more results over time than short, infrequent bursts of motivation. So what habit can you apply this to today?

This passage is great, and the rain is beautiful. But it’s even better when you remember that, just like the rest of the Old Testament, this passage is just a shadow of the abundant life Jesus offers. And just like all the rest of creation, the rain and grass and new growth is just a picture of the new life of someone who has been made new in Christ. Jesus says that He “has come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) So this abundant life, this new growth, this blessing and flourishing that Psalm 65 talks about? It’s available to everyone who believes in Christ, no matter the weather. In honor of May being Beef Month, I thought I would try to share a few beef recipes throughout the month! We had a group of friends come out to tour our ranch last Sunday and we wanted an easy way to serve them homegrown beef, so I made a big batch of this sloppy joe meat. In all honesty, sloppy joes aren’t my favorite way to eat beef (I’m not a fan of messy food so if it has the word “sloppy” in the name…) but they are SO easy for a crowd. Here’s some estimated measurements for what I did. I’ll put a picture of the original recipe in my stories. 2 packages hamburger - our package sizes vary so probably about 2.5-3 lbs A generous shake of dried onion 1 ½ cup ketchup 1 cup water 1 tsp? celery salt 2 Tbsp brown sugar ¼ cup lemon juice 1 Tbsp W. sauce (not spelling that) 1 Tbsp salt (this is what the recipe calls for, but I thought it looked like a lot when I put it in, so I’d probably do less next time.) 2 tsp vinegar ½ tsp dry mustard In my opinion, measurements are just suggestions - measure with your heart and taste it at the end to see what else it needs 😅 I didn’t simmer it very long because I just stuck it in the fridge and then the next day put it in the crockpot to reheat. Obviously sloppy joes are supposed to be a sandwich, but the leftovers can be used in all kinds of meal combinations! Just out of curiosity - do you call this “sloppy joes” or do you have a different name for it? What are you good at? That’s a question I’ve heard a lot as I’m trying to narrow down what I have to offer in this social media space. One answer I keep coming back to is that I know the Bible really well. I know a lot about how the whole storyline fits together, I know a lot of tips and tricks for digging deeper into it, and I have a heart for inspiring people to know God more through His Word. The problem is, I don’t like the way I sound when I talk about that. It’s hard to talk about knowing the Bible well without sounding self-righteous. But God has been convicting me for a while now that I should probably be more open about what he’s gifted me with and worry less about how it sounds when I talk about it. Because yes, maybe there are a few people who will think I’m self-righteous if I talk about how well I know the Bible. But maybe there are a lot of others who want to dive deeper into the Bible, but don’t know where to start and could really benefit from my experience. And I think I need to start focusing way more on those people and caring less about the others. If that’s you, and you’re interested in learning more about where to start with the Bible, I’m starting to work on some resources for you (and a new website and email list to make them easier to find). Some random thoughts about holiness and happiness on a rainy Saturday: We see this advice all over the internet: “do what makes you happy.” And in response, I’ve seen other posts saying, “no, do what makes you holy.”
Some random thoughts about holiness and happiness on a rainy Saturday: We see this advice all over the internet: “do what makes you happy.” And in response, I’ve seen other posts saying, “no, do what makes you holy.” To which I heartily agreed at first, but then I thought about it more. What if those two things are not as different as we make them seem? Because true holiness means to be set apart, sanctified, and generally just becoming more and more like Jesus. So the holier you become, the more your desires will be aligned with His, and you’ll find pleasure in doing what pleases Him. Which is the only kind of happiness that lasts. On the other hand, if you pursue happiness on its own, you’ll probably wind up chasing after a lot of things that can never truly satisfy you, and certainly won’t bring you any closer to Christ. And if you pursue a version of “holiness” that involves a lot of rule following and trying to be perfect, you’ll miss the mark of Christ-centered holiness and certainly won’t be very happy. The prompt to “do what makes you holy” is still great advice, as long as what you do is motivated by a heartfelt desire to be like Jesus and not by legalism. And the holier you become, the more you’ll find happiness in doing what pleases God. So that at some point, doing what makes you holy and doing what makes you happy might look pretty much the same.
