Know it, Do it, Teach it

This post originally appeared on my old blog, The King and His Kingdom.

“For Ezra had prepared his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach his statues and rules in Israel.”

This is the verse that’s been on repeat in my head this week. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can share and teach God’s Word, both in person and online.

But this verse lays out what has to come first for anyone who wants to share God’s Word.

First, studying it. You can’t teach what you don’t know.  If you want to tell people what God’s Word says, you’d better be sure you KNOW what it says. It can be tempting to just pick a punchy verse and then say what YOU think about it, but you are not the authority. God’s Word is.

Not only that, you have to do it. Nobody wants to listen to someone who doesn’t practice what they preach. All the Bible knowledge in the world is useless if you never apply it to your life!

Obviously this doesn’t mean we have to live a perfect life before we can share God’s Word! But we have to get our priorities in the right order. If we start with our own relationship with God through His Word, sharing it with others is the natural next step.

For me this looks like teaching youth at church and sharing online, but it can be as simple as talking to a friend about what you’re reading.

How are you planning to study, do, or teach God’s Word this week?
